Chicago's mighty DKV TRIO (called "the best working band in Chicago
jazz" by John Corbett in the Chicago Reader) finally make their New
Orleans debut, treating us to the power, sensitivity, and dynamic
interaction that has made them one of the premier improvising groups
in the world.
Individually, each musician is a wonder. Collectively, they attain
ecstatic heights and stir up monster grooves like few others can.
HAMID DRAKE: (drums, frame drums, tabla) one of the most in-demand jazz
drummers in the world today. currently enjoys long-standing associations
with PETER BROTZMANN, PHAROAH SANDERS, FRED ANDERSON, BILL LASWELL and many
others. Worked extensively with DON CHERRY from 1978 til Cherry's passing in
1995. Also has worked with reggae groups like the I-TALS, HEPTONES, and
AFRICASSA. In 1999, did a short tour of the east coast in a quartet with
KIDD JORDAN (New
Orleans deep-breathing master), FRED ANDERSON, and WILLIAM PARKER.
Hamid's approach to the drums is deep in soul, swing, and intellect
- moving from free time to the the most stone mother groove you ever
heard in the course of one piece. A disciple of the great New
Orleans drummer Ed BLACKWELL, Hamid is very psyched to be playing in
the Crescent City.
KENT KESSLER: (bass) probably the busiest bassist in Chicago today,
Kent performs with a huge array of Chicago-based and visiting
musicians (Brotzmann, MATS GUSTAFSSON, JOE MORRIS, GEORG GRAWE, JOE
MCPHEE) and is a vital part of several important Chicago ensembles
(Vandermark 5, FreeJazzFour, Jeb Bishop trio, NRG Ensemble). Kent's
huge sound and potent drive can push a band to lift right off the
stand...
KEN VANDERMARK: (tenor sax, clarinet, bass clarinet) Perhaps second
only to William Parker for the title of hardest-working man in free
jazz, Ken has been an integral part of the Chicago music scene since
he moved there in 1992. His extroverted horn-playing has been heard
in a number of groups, such as: Vandermark 5, STEAM, Signal to Noise
Unit, Sound In Action Trio, the Peter Brotzmann Tentet and DKV. Past
and present collaborators have included such international-minded
experimentalists as JIM O'ROURKE, PAUL LOVENS, BROTZMANN, JOE
MORRIS, MATS GUSTAFSSON, and FRED VAN HOVE. Ken appears on a
dizzying number of concerts and recordings and is determined to
bring creative music to new audiences.
DKV Trio have 4 CD's out on the Chicago label OKKA-DISK. The latest
features special guest JOE MORRIS on guitar.

Don't miss the first New Orleans concert by this superlative band...
GATE CITY THREE: Charles Waters (saxophones) and Roger Waters
(trumpet) have wowed New Orleans audiences in recent years during
semi-frequent appearances with their quartet the GOLD SPARKLE BAND.
Charles moved to NYC 2 years ago, thus cutting down on the group's
southern performances. Their last NOLA gig was a roof-raising
blowout at 1998's Living Music Festival at the Faubourg Center, so
we are very happy to have them back with us.
Since moving to New York, Charles has worked with an impressive
roster of deep spirits, including: WILLIAM PARKER, DANIEL CARTER, ROY
CAMPBELL, CHRIS JONAS, and NATE McBRIDE. Roger continues to be an
active part of the Atlanta music scene, playing everything from
klezmer to total free improvisation in various settings. The GATE
CITY THREE is the latest installment in the continuing saga of these
two leading new lights of creative music....
